Kauai Family Photographer: Frequently Asked Questions

This Kauai family photographer FAQ covers the most common questions we get about family photo sessions on Kauai, including locations, group sizes, weather, rescheduling, turnaround time and what to expect before and after your photos.

Booking

  • We keep it simple, you can book a session by filling out the short form here on our Booking page with your dates and how many people are in your group. We review your inquiry, send you our open time slots during your stay, and once you choose a time slot for your photo session you simply purchase the matching photo session on our website to lock it in.

  • We keep it simple: the full amount is paid at the time of booking. Once you check out with the correct package, you immediately receive a receipt and a personal confirmation email with your date and time locked in.

  • We recommend booking as soon as you know your Kauai dates, especially for sunrise and sunset sessions. Prime spots often fill up 4-5 months in advance, but we always try our best to accommodate last‑minute travelers when we can. As a Kauai family photographer, I recommend booking as soon as you know your travel dates, especially if you want sunrise

  • The best way to reach us is through our Booking or Contact page so we have all your trip details in one place. You can also email us at hello@photosbykyle.com

  • We accept all major credit and debit cards, as well as digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, through our secure online checkout.

Session Info

  • Aim for comfortable outfits that let you move, sit, and walk easily on sand.

    • Light, breathable fabrics in soft neutrals, earth tones, or muted blues and greens is preferred but not a demand.

    • Barefoot is usually best on the beach, but if you have shoes thats okey too all up too you. And if you’re unsure, you can always send us a quick photo of your outfit ideas and we help you choose.

  • For each photo session, you get a relaxed, guided experience and a big gallery so you have options.

    Mini Session (1–5 people)
About 15–20 minutes, usually 50–100+ edited photos.

    Full Family Session (4–9 people)
About 30–45 minutes, usually 80–100+ edited photos.

    Large Family Session (10–20 people)
About 45–60 minutes, usually 80 –150+ edited photos.

    Couples Session (2 people)
About 20–40 minutes, usually 50–100+ edited photos.

    Elopement / Small Wedding
About 1 hour, usually 80–150+ edited photos.

  • A Mini Session is short and simple—perfect when you just want a clean set of favorite photos without a long shoot. A Full Session gives us more time, more combinations, and deeper coverage of your family.

    • Mini Session (1–5 people): About 15–20 minutes, ideal for couples, small families, or anyone who wants something quick and easy.

    • Full Family Session (4–9 people): About 30–45 minutes, better for medium‑size families, shy kids, grandparents, and anyone who wants more variety.

  • Think about two things: how many people you have and how much variety you want.

    • Couples or very small families who mainly want a handful of solid favorites usually do well with a Mini Session or Couples Session.

    • Families of 4–9 people who want more groupings, candids, and time to warm up are better suited for a Full Family Session.

    • If you’re planning a ceremony with guests, you’ll want an Elopement / Small Wedding Session.

    • Large families or multi‑generation groups of 10–20 people are best served by a Large Family Session so we have enough time for all the combinations you’re envisioning.

If you’re still unsure, send me your group size and what you’re hoping to get, and I’ll point you to the best option.

  • Totally normal. I assume most people don’t model for a living.

I’ll give you simple prompts and easy direction so you always know where to stand and what to do with your hands, while keeping everything relaxed and natural.

  • That’s totally normal, and I plan your session around real kids, not perfect behavior. I keep things moving, use simple games and prompts, and focus on short bursts of attention instead of stiff posing so kids can have fun and take breaks. Some of the best photos come from little in‑between moments and real personalities, so you don’t need to stress or apologize if your kids are energetic or shy at first.

  • Simple, meaningful items like fresh flower leis, a favorite blanket, senior flag or a small toy for your child are always welcome as long as they’re easy to carry and fit the beach environment. Because sessions are fairly short and the light changes quickly, full outfit changes are usually not recommended for Mini Sessions, but we can often work in a quick layer change (like adding a shawl, hat, or shirt) during Full Sessions. If you’re dreaming of multiple looks or more styled details, let me know in advance so we can choose the right session type and plan for it.

  • You don’t have to know any poses—that’s our job. We guide you into simple, flattering positions and give you easy prompts so you always know where to stand and what to do with your hands, while still keeping everything relaxed and natural. We mix a few “everyone looking at the camera” photos with lots of candid moments, so you end up with images that feel like you instead of stiff poses.

  • If you look at a map of Kauai, I mostly shoot on the East Side and South Shore depending on weather and traffic.

  • No. You don’t have to study a map of Kauai or decide anything in advance—We choose the location for you based on the light and weather etc.

Weather & rescheduling

  • Kauai weather can change quickly, so we keep a close eye on the forecast and stay flexible on the day of your photo session. We do not stop or cancel for a little bit of rain—some of our favorite images come from moody skies and light showers—and we always wait on location for at least 20 minutes to see how conditions develop before making any decision to reschedule. If the weather clearly is not good for your experience or photos after that, we work with you to move your session to another available time during your stay at no rescheduling fee.

After your session

  • You receive an email with a link to your online gallery where you can view your photos, download high‑resolution files, and share them with family and friends. We always recommend saving a backup of your downloads to your own computer or cloud storage. After 60 days the folder will disappear.

  • All delivered images are fully edited for color, exposure, and overall look, with straightening and basic cleanup where needed. We can help with things like strong sunburns when appropriate, but we do not do body‑shape changes—we want you to look like you, just on your best day.

Location

  • I use a few favorite spots that work great for light, access, and views.

    • Family sessions are usually photographed at Kalapaki Beach in Lihue. It has soft sand, water, and mountain views, plus easy parking and access.

    • Couples sessions are most often at Shipwreck Beach in Poipu for cliffs and waves, or at Kalapaki Beach if you prefer a more relaxed, easy‑access spot.

    • Elopement / Small Wedding sessions are primarily at Shipwreck Beach (cliffs and shoreline), or another agreed‑upon Kauai location that fits your ceremony.

As your Kauai family photographer, I’ll help you choose a location that fits your group size, mobility, and the scenery you’re hoping for.

  • For our standard sessions, we usually stay in one general area so we can make the most of the light and your time instead of spending it walking or driving. Some locations do offer a mix of looks within a short walking distance, like shoreline, rocks, and a bit of greenery, and we’ll guide you to the best spot for your group. If you’re picturing multiple very different locations or a more adventurous session around the island, we can plan a custom session and quote that includes extra time and travel.

  • Anything outside my standard session options and locations is priced case‑by‑case.

If you’d like a custom location, extra coverage time, multiple spots, or something more tailored (like a full‑day adventure or a unique part of the island), I’ll put together a custom quote based on travel, time, and what you’re hoping to do.

Custom sessions and custom locations are booked with a non‑refundable retainer and are not eligible for the same reschedule/refund flexibility as my regular Kalapaki, Shipwreck, and standard session options.

Custom locations may require permits or extra time, which your Kauai family photographer will factor into your quote.

  • These locations are reliable for light, access, and overall conditions. We use them a lot because we can check tides, crowds, and weather ourself and make sure the beach is usable before your session.

Kalapaki works great for families and minis thanks to easy parking, a gentle walk, and clean, open sand. Shipwreck is ideal for couples and elopements, with cliffs, waves, and more of an adventurous feel.

  • Kauai’s beaches can change fast with tides, storms, and seasonal shifts, so the sand, waterline, and greenery might look a bit different from what you’ve seen online.

I always choose locations based on current conditions so we still get great photos, even if the exact shape of the beach or waterline has changed since the last time you were here.

Kauai Family Photographer Pricing and Experience

  • We offer Mini Sessions, Full Family Sessions, Large Sessions for big family groups, Couples Sessions, and Elopement / Small Wedding coverage. Mini Sessions are great for smaller families of about 1–5 people who want something quick and easy, Full Family Sessions give a bit more time and variety for medium‑sized families of about 4–9 people, and Large Sessions are built for extended families of 10 or more people so everyone is included. Couples Sessions focus on just the two of you, and Elopement / Small Wedding coverage is built around the couple plus a small number of guests. We are also open to creative ideas and custom fly‑out sessions around Kauaʻi or beyond—just reach out with what you’re dreaming of, and we’ll let you know what’s possible and provide a custom quote.

  • Our sessions are relaxed, friendly, and guided—nothing stiff or awkward. We start with everyone together, then break into smaller groups like couples, siblings, and parents while we talk you through simple prompts and poses, focusing on colorful, candid photos that feel like you. Working with a Kauai family photographer means We guide you with simple prompts so you feel relaxed, not stiff or awkward.

  • Right now, our sessions are designed to include a generous number of edited images so you get a full story without upsells. We are planning to add options for large prints and other products in the future, and we will update our information once those are available.

  • Our Mini Sessions are best for smaller families, usually up to about 4–5 people, so we can keep things quick, fun, and stress‑free. Full Sessions are ideal for medium‑sized families of about 6–9 people, or two smaller families traveling together, while Large Sessions are designed for big extended family groups of 10+ people and give us enough time to photograph all the combinations you want. Couples Sessions are focused on just the two of you, and Elopement/Small Wedding coverage is built around the couple plus a small number of guests.

  • Yes. A non‑refundable 40 USD will be deducted from your total as soon as you book. This covers a 20 USD admin fee for handling the required paperwork and a 20 USD Hawaiʻi beach permit so we can photograph your session legally on the beach. Because permits are issued for a specific date, time, and group size, these costs are non‑refundable even if you cancel or reschedule.

Group Size / Who can book

  • To keep things running smooth and relaxed, each session has its own group size sweet spot.

Mini Session: Up to 5 people.
Full Family Session: Up to 9 people.
    Couples Session: 2 people.
Elopement / Small Wedding: Best for about 2–15 guests.

If you have a larger group, reach out and I’ll help you choose the right option or put together a custom plan.

Hiring a Kauai family photographer ensures everyone is in the photos instead of one person always being behind the camera.

  • Yes, as long as we stay within the group size for your session type.

If adding grandparents or extra family pushes you over the limit, we’ll bump you up to the next session option so everyone gets enough time and we’re not rushed.

  • If your group gets bigger or smaller, just let me know as soon as you can.

We can adjust your session type if needed so the coverage still fits your ʻohana and the time we have together.

  • Yes, I do shoot larger groups and extended families.

For big family gatherings, We recommend a larger session option or a custom plan so we have enough time to cover all the combinations you want.

Delivery / Turnaround

  • We deliver fast so you can enjoy your photos while you’re still on vacation.

    • Morning sessions are delivered the same day.

    • Afternoon and sunset sessions are usually delivered the next day.

    • Elopements and small weddings are also delivered within 24 hours.

Your photos arrive in a private online gallery where you can download, share, and print in high resolution.

As a Kauai family photographer, I aim to deliver your gallery as quickly as possible while still giving each image careful attention.

  • Yes. Even though my full gallery turnaround is already very fast, I still send a few teaser images so you have something to share right away.

Teasers usually go out within the first 24 hours, often the same day as your session, followed by your full edited gallery shortly after.

  • Yes. All delivered images are fully edited for color, exposure, and overall look before you see them.

You don’t have to sort through unedited or duplicate files—everything in your gallery is ready to download, share, and print.

  • Your online gallery stays live for 60 days from the date it’s delivered.

During that time, you can download your photos as many times as you’d like and share the link with friends and family. I strongly recommend saving your images in at least two places—a computer and a backup drive or cloud storage—so you have them safe and accessible long‑term.

  • All of your images are fully edited for color, exposure, and overall look, with straightening and basic cleanup where needed. For things like strong sunburn, noticeable tan lines, or temporary blemishes, we can soften or reduce them when it makes sense so the focus stays on your expressions. We don’t do heavy airbrushing or body‑shape changes—we want you to look like yourself, just on your best day.

  • Yes, you’re welcome to share a few favorite examples or must‑have shots so we understand what you’re drawn to. We’ll use those as inspiration and then photograph your family in a way that fits the actual light, location, and personalities in front of us instead of copying every pose. That balance keeps your photos true to you while still hitting the moments that matter most.

Inclusivity & Vendors

  • Absolutely. All couples and families are welcome here, and our goal is to create a relaxed, respectful experience where everyone feels comfortable and seen. If there’s anything specific that would help you feel more at ease—pronouns, family structure, cultural traditions—just let us know when you book so we can plan accordingly.

  • Yes. For jewelry, we highly recommend Soulscape Jewelry, a Kauaʻi‑based small business that handcrafts unique resin pieces using real shells gathered from Kauaʻi’s shores, so you’re truly taking home a tiny piece of the island. Each ring, bracelet, and necklace feels like wearable art and a meaningful keepsake from your time here.

Policies & other details

  • No, we do not provide RAW files. Your gallery includes a generous number of fully edited, high‑resolution images that are ready to print and share.

  • We meet you at the agreed location, say hi to everyone, and take a short walk together to the spot while you enjoy the view. We start with a big group photo so everyone relaxes, then move into couples, kids, parents, and other combinations while we guide you the whole time; sometimes we show a sneak peek on the back of the camera, especially if you ask, but the real magic is in the final edited gallery.

  • Yes. Photos By Kyle is Hawaii licensed, fully insured, and always properly permitted when required. Most of the locations we use do require a permit, and those costs are included in our rates—there’s nothing extra you need to do. We handle the permit process online before your shoot, and the specific Hawaii permit for your session is with us on location in our camera bag or back pocket. If you’d like to see it at any point during your session, just ask and we’ll gladly show you.

Refunds, Cancellations & Rescheduling

  • We offer a full refund (minus a 40‑dollar non‑refundable permit/admin fee if a photo permit was issued) when you cancel for any reason at least 72 hours (3 days) before your photo shoot meet‑up time by emailing us at hello@photosbykyle.com. Cancellations made within 72 hours and up to 24 hours before your session qualify for either a 50 percent refund or a one‑time reschedule at no additional charge. Cancellations within 24 hours of the session start time, or “no shows,” are not eligible for a refund. We know Kauai trips are packed with tubing, boat tours, and hikes, so if something changes in your schedule, email us as soon as possible and we’ll do our best to adjust. We’ll also email you the night before or the morning of your shoot with final directions and reminders so everything feels easy and stress‑free.

  • Yes. You can reschedule if you contact us at least 72 hours (3 days) before your session. Reschedules within 72 hours are handled case by case and may be treated the same as late cancellations, depending on the situation and permit costs.

  • Please plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early so we can use your full session time. If you’re late, your session may be shorter so we can stay within the light and schedule; refunds or extensions aren’t guaranteed for late arrival.

  • Our goal is to show you the style you can expect before you ever book, through our portfolio and recent sessions. Because of this, refunds for style or posing aren’t offered, but if something major goes wrong on our end, we’ll work with you on a reshoot or reasonable solution.
